Tips for Reviewing the Midyear Report Card
Tips for Reviewing the Midyear Report Card The school year has reached the halfway mark, which means it is report card time. Co-Founder and CEO Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center says that while some parents and children dread this time of year, report cards present an opportunity to make adjustments if needed and get children back on track. The midyear report card is a great chance for parents to assess their childrens strengths, weaknesses, progress and study skills, she says. Parents should open the lines of communication with their children and childrens teachers and guidance counselors and formulate a plan for the rest of the year to address any parent concerns. Huntington offers parents these tips when reviewing the report card: Its important to focus on progress. Too often, parents jump to the letter grades and dont spend time looking at much else. What you should look for is your childs progress toward mastery of grade-level standards. How is your child growing this school year? Pay attention to progress indicators and benchmarks. Effort matters most. Parents who are involved in the homework routine at home should have a good sense of how their children are doing on school work, but the report card will shed additional light. Look for marks and comments on the report card that highlight your childs effortand whether that effort is reflected in his or her grades, as it should be. Look for common warning signs. Low grades are one problem, but keep an eye out for other common red flags, including any indicators that your child has poor study skills, lacks focus, struggles to keep up or has difficulty with essential skills like organization and time management. If youve noticed a change in your childs demeanor and these kinds of issues are showing up on the report card, a discussion with the teacher is a good idea before the crisis period worsens. Content knowledge is just one measure. Yes, it is important to review your childs grades on content knowledge in the core subjects, but in todays education landscape, there are many other measures of students performance. Review the report card for comments and marks on your childs higher-level thinking, problem solving, comprehension and other similar abilities. Attitude is everything. Childrens attitudes about school are very tellingand a child who seems indifferent or angry about school is likely dealing with low confidence and feelings of hopelessness. Pay attention to any comments from the teacher (and probe further during the parent-teacher conference) on your childs motivation and overall attitude about learning and his or her grades. Report cards are a valuable tool for parents to gain a detailed understanding of how their child is performing in school. And no matter what the midyear report card looks like, Huntington encourages parents to keep in mind that no problem is insurmountable. If your childs midyear report card highlighted areas of concern, call Huntington, she says. There is plenty of time to address and correct issues before the end of the year, and help your child re-build his or her self-esteem and finish the year strong. Sexual Harassment in the Workplace What To Do As a Student/Young Adult Image via. https://pixabay.com/en/metoo-women-harassment-sexual-2859980/ Understanding sexual harassment is a huge part of the fight against it. Sexual harassment is technically defined as, âHarassment (typically of a woman) in a workplace, or other professional or social situation, involving the making of unwanted sexual advances or obscene remarks.â Basically, sexual harassment can range from disgusting and uncomfortable comments to disturbing actions (a form of sexual assault). If a person is making you feel uneasy or unsafe in the workplace because of a sexual remark or action, thatâs when you know itâs sexual harassment. Since sexual harassment isnât just one particular thing, it can be hard to identify when youâve been harassed and when you should say something. The rule of thumb, in my opinion, is if you feel uncomfortable, you should say something about it. If youâve been sexually harassed at work, there are a few steps that I recommend taking so that you receive justice after experiencing this horrific act. First and foremost I would talk to a friend/colleague within the company so that you donât have to fight this battle alone. This person can either be a confidant, or they can help you when you choose to speak to someone higher-up about the incident. After talking to a trusted friend/colleague, you should talk to Human Resources. The people working in the Human Resources offices of any company are trained and know the protocol when it comes to sexual harassment in the workplace. You go an HR person and tell them your problem face-to-face so nothing is misconstrued and so they can see how serious the problem. In addition, you can talk to your HR representative about different ways of handling it. Once you go to HR they will be the communication between you and the sexual harasser. If HR doesnât do anything about it, you talk to your boss. Companies are aware of the seriousness of sexual assault and they want to prevent any incidences within the workplace. If you set up a meeting with your boss, they will understand the severity of the situation and how the incident has caused you to question the companyâs integrity and the people they choose to hire. Image via. https://pixabay.com/en/action-analysis-business-2277292/ If you are nervous to go to your boss, you can bring a friend/colleague with you for emotional support. If you are a woman and your boss is a man and you donât feel comfortable talking to him about it, find a woman in a high-up position who can help you navigate the issue. Having another female voice can help you find some closure in the incident and they can help you navigate the process of reporting sexual harassment within the company. However, when it comes to sexual harassment, the most important thing is your health, both mentally and physically. If you are having trouble coping with the situation, it is important to ask for help. That help can be from a friend, a colleague, or even a therapist. There is no reason why you should have to deal with the emotional repercussions of something you didnât ask for nor deserve. Healing from a case of sexual harassment goes so far beyond contacting your HR representative. You are the one who you should be worried about. Donât worry about your position in the company or people finding out, you need to take care of yourself when it comes to something as serious as sexual harassment. I want all of my female readers to remember that sexual harassment isnât okay and if you are a victim of sexual harassment, you did not ask for it, itâs not your fault, and you will make it through, I promise. Itâs devastating that sexual harassment is such a terrible epidemic in the workplace, but thatâs why itâs important to stand up for yourself if you find yourself in an uncomfortable sexual situation. You are not alone and you have people in your corner, never forget that.

Games Can Help Kids Learn! - ALOHA Mind Math
Games Can Help Kids Learn! Ask any parent about the best way to keep a child occupied and sitting in one position for more than 10 minutes and the answer will mostly be âHand them a video game!â Though we try to impose restrictions and limit the time spent on electronic items such as games or the computer, an easier way might be to introduce children to games that are fun as well as educational. In this way, we can utilize the time that is going to be spent on playing games anyway, in an effective and positive way. Free Educational Games Online:You can find a multitude of learning games for kids on online sites which can be played free of cost. These are usually even provided in a grade-wise grouping which makes it easy to find age appropriateness for your child. Do make sure that you scout around and check out the site online before you let your child play any game unsupervised especially for younger children. You will even find fun games for kids that help motor skills, such as painting or typing games, as well as a variety of math games for kids. Some of the most popular games are: Coloring games like this which educates the child about colors as well as teaches them motor control in a fun way. Math games like this one in which the child gets to play a game like pac-man and also solve some simple math problems along the way. Sites like this also give a grade-wise selection of games. Using gadgets effectively: Children are instantly attracted to gadgets like tablets or phones and pick up navigation skills to get around these devices even faster than an adult can. Parents can ensure that devices are updated with the current apps and newer games, choosing a combination of fun and educational games. Kids spend a lot of time on gadgets especially when you may be traveling and there may be nothing else to entertain them, so by choosing the best educational games for kids, you can make sure that they can learn along with play.âSuper Whyâ has been named as one of the best educational Apple apps for kids, by Parenting.com, Board Games: Whenever possible, parents can also sit with children and play games such as Scrabble which are great for building vocabulary. Initially they might need a little parental guidance unlike with some online games or apps, but once the child gets an idea of the rules, they can start playing with friends and spread the enthusiasm too. As we can see, there are many games that we can choose from to help our kids have fun and learn at the same time. Another way to make learning fun and easy is to introduce them to mental math techniques through Abacus classes at Aloha USA. Please see our website for more details: http://www.aloha-usa.com/. How to Help Improve Your Childs Concentration - ALOHA Mind Math
How to Help Improve Your Childs Concentration Do you feel as though your child is not paying enough attention at school or while doing homework? Conditions like ADHD in kids are a big concern for parents, especially when kids have problems focusing on their work. While this may be a possibility in a few cases, a lot of the time it is because of changes that occur as they are grow up and have more things to think about, as well as varying attention spans. Here are some simple ways to try to improve our childâs concentration at home: Basic needs: Make sure that all basic needs such as food and sleep are satisfactory, as these can be big factors which affect a childâs concentration. It is not easy to pay attention to anything much with a nagging stomach or with needing to yawn every 5 minutes. Once these are out of the way, it is much easier for you to understand how to improve your childâs concentration power. Clear space: It is not easy for children to concentrate if the space around them is cluttered with toys or books, with something or the other attracting their attention away from the main assignment. In case a younger sibling is around, they should also not be a source of distraction, unless you can arrange for both to study quietly in the same environment. Make things interesting: If the work that the child is involved in is a subject that is not so interesting for him, it is very natural for his attention to wander. If you feel this might be the case, then try to make the subject more interesting by introducing some fun activities related to the schoolwork. This could mean a new game on the iPad that touches on the same concepts, or even introducing a fun tool like the abacus to make math calculations more absorbing for the child. Timeouts: On days when your child may have a lot of homework, do not try to make her sit and do it all at once. Fix a time period such as 20 or 30 minutes depending on how long you think your childâs attention span is and pick a timeout activity such as playing a short game, or just running around that will help your child recharge her batteries before getting down to serious work again. Concentration exercises: If you feel that your child needs some additional help to him calm down and focus even after the above steps, teach him some relaxation and concentration exercises using techniques like yoga, which he can use to create a space for himself even in a crowded environment. At Aloha USA, we offer classes in Abacus and English with an interesting and well-scheduled program that will help to keep your childâs attention and help improve their overall concentration. Chemistry Conversion Chart For Moles
Chemistry Conversion Chart For MolesThere are several reasons to buy a chemistry conversion chart for moles. First, as you probably know, moles are the units of measurement for measuring the elemental composition of things like water, sulfur, or salt. Second, there is a lot of confusion in these parts about things like oxidation. Third, moles are sometimes used interchangeably with parts per million (ppm).Oxidation is the conversion of one element into another. This can be true whether the substances being oxidized are elements or compounds. Some of the more common examples of oxidation are:Carbon dioxide is one of the most common example of oxidation. In a petrochemical plant, which uses carbon dioxide to provide steam for the production of gasoline and other fuels, the process of harmonization involves combining the carbon dioxide with argon to produce carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is used for its smoke and odorless smoke properties.Other chemicals which are similar in behavior to carbon dioxide are oxides, ketones, and replacement methylamine. Oxidation can also take place during the cooling phase of a reaction. The most common example of this is the oxidation of a compound such as ethylene with sulfur. While moles are much easier to measure than water, it has to be noted that moles do not necessarily have the same boiling point as water. If you wish to measure moles of substances, you may need to find out the boiling point of the substance in question. It would be a good idea to use a conversion chart, because you do not need to measure moles of your own. You could also just use your own judgement to figure out the boiling point of something.Another thing to consider when converting your substances to moles is the trace element content. For example, if you mix aluminum oxide with hydrogen chloride, you will create aluminum sulfate, which is highly insoluble in water. But if you mix the two substances together in a mixture of water and sodium hydroxide, yo u will get aluminum hydroxide, which is a strong, odorless, but easily soluble, liquid. These are very different substances, yet they both have a similar chemical formula. As you can see, there are several reasons to buy a chemistry conversion chart for moles. In addition to serving their specific purposes, these charts can help you work out if you are mixing up items correctly, or if you have made an error in the measurement of a substance.
